True Widow - As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth [2011]

True Widow - As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth [2011]

I've been obsessing over this band for quite sometime now. A few friends envy the fact that I bought their first S/T release on vinyl online. This started my craze to start buying records online again, which is a terrible idea. I won't get into that. This band has been given the new genre term of "Stonegaze" which is just "Slowcore" with a bit of an edge than a suicidal feeling that you might get while listening to early releases of LOW or CODEINE. Sadcore is another one.

This record starts off so huge that it gave me chills. Knowing that it was recorded on 2" tape really adds some warmth to every instrument. The songs drops off a bit in the middle and pick up towards the end for a good closer track "Doomseer". They were supposed to play my city on the current tour they will be on shortly, but sadly they can't make it. Bummer. Watch this before you listen to this record.

Young Widows - In and Out of Youth and Lightness [2011]

Young Widows - In and Out of Youth and Lightness

When I was told that there wasn't much guitar on this record, I wasn't sure if it was how I wanted Young Widows to end up in my mind. It feels more and more bands are giving up the old 6 string for some music in a can. This record is not that, it's not as up front as Old Wounds was, but still a great record. It reminds me of another band from the 90's. Please feel free to help me out with this one in the comments.

Boris - New Album [2011]

Boris - New Album [2011]

This is the first of three records to come out this year by Boris. As usual, Boris is all over the place. This is the super limited Japanese only release that's like 56 bucks to buy from Japan. With that kind of money I would hope it was meant to help Japan in the current state they are in. Sorry for the weird download site, my internet has been slow the past two days, I don't feel like re-upping it to Mediafire.

EDIT: This album is called "New Album" not daymare (that's the label name). Here is the tracklisting.

1. Flare
2. Hope -Hope- ** Attention Please
3. Party Boy ** Attention Please
4. Black Original ** Heavy Rock Hits v2
5. Pardon?
6. Spoon ** Attention Please
7. Jackson Head ** Heavy Rocks
8. Les Paul Custom '86 ** Attention Please
9. Tu, La La ** Heavy Rocks
10. Looprider

Milk Music - Beyond Living [2010]

Milk Music - Beyond Living [2010]

If you've seen this everywhere and haven't checked it out and you're a fan of early Husker du/Dino Jr, you're probably a luddite. When trying to buy this record off one of the band members, I asked where to send the money to, he replied with "My butt". Needless to say, I received the record recently, and it sounds amazing.

Obits - Moody, Standard, and Poor [2011]

Obits - Moody, Standard, and Poor [2011]

Leakin' while you're sleepin'. Ex Hot Snakes, Drive like Jehu. Enuf.

Grails - Deep Politics [2011]

Grails - Deep Politics [2011]

A band that can do no wrong. Emil Amos is an amazing musician. Seeing him play in Om was fantastic. I don't think he ever played the same fill twice.

Complications

Complications LP

Gritty punk rock from Montreal. Get into it, or don't.

Cold Cave - Cherish The Light Years [2011]

Cold Cave - Cherish The Light Years Gone for now.

If you like The Cure, you'll probably love this album. A lot of guest artists on this album. "Cold Cave associates Dominick Fernow on electronics and Jennifer Clavin on backing vocal and synthesizer, plus Tonie Joy, Nick Zinner and Sean Martin on guitars, Daryl Palumbo on bass and guitar, Matt Sweeney on bass and Gae Licata on drums. Several of these will be joining Eisold on the road as the touring band, with other players to be announced."

Sorry for never updating, I don't think anyone cares anymore.

1.2.11

Moutheater - Colonial [2011]

Moutheater - Colonial [2011]

I was a little skeptical (as I always am of anything new) of how a band that has been able to keep up a good 90's formula. The song they put up on their myspace was kinda a whatever track which made me hold off from wanting to buy this. If you're into UNSANE, JESUS LIZARD or other band's like those two that existed during the 90's (also add TAD), you're going to enjoy this. Buy it on vinyl from swimhardercassettes.com. It glows in the dark for all you children out there.

Mammoth Grinder Hatred Surge Split [2011]

Mammoth Grinder/Hatred Surge Split

Let me start off by saying this is a better rip than the other shitty one Toxicbreed Funhouse posted. Anyway MAMMOTH GRINDER's side on this is fucking tight as hell. This band is amazing live, I can't get over how tight everyone is. They have refined their sound to be a lot more death metal than what they used to be like on Total Extinction. Hatred Surge side is pretty good, keep in mind that the guitarist (Chris Ulsh) is the same dude in both bands. Very difference riffage. I think i have a man crush on Chris. I'll stop. Rahi from Insect Warfare now sings with HATRED SURGE.

Buy this if you can. It will probably sell out before you get some on valentines day. (OUT FEB 14, cyclopeanrecords.com)

Low Threat Profile - LP [2011]

Low Threat Profile - LP

Remember when I said New Lows might be the best hardcore of 2011? Well really, it has nothing on this. I guess I wasn't expecting this to come out. I thought Low Threat Profile only had one 7" in them. If you don't know who these guys are, its the powerviolence dream team. Features Andy from No Comment, Matt from Infest and Bob from Lack of Interest. The first 7" is tight as fuck, but this is still good. Apparently that first (and only) 7" was supposed to come out pre-2001 but something happened and it was sat on for 9 years. Anyway, short fast tunes by angry old dudes. Amazing LP.

Earth - Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light: I [2011]

Earth - Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light: I

I tried to get my friend andrew to post on here but he gave up pretty soon after I invited him. Here's what he was going to say..

So I was asked to come and contribute a bit to this blog and luckily for me I had recently come across the new Earth album Earth - Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light: I. I would assume that Earth is a very polarizing band, with those that are totally stoked on a new Earth record and those that couldn't care less about this boring shit. In this record Earth progress further from the..

Anyway, I was listening to that Date Palms record before hand. Right after this Earth record came on and I still thought it was Date Palms (check it out below!). This Earth record isn't far off from the previous release "The bee's made honey" and it's definitely no Earth 2. So if you if you're into whatever I just mentioned, check it out and BUY IT!

New Lows - Harvest of the Carcass [2011]

New Lows - Harvest of the Carcass

Deathwish Inc’s latest release “Harvest of the Carcass” by New Lows..First of let me state that this band does have a great live performance and they were really nice dudes when they came here the first and only time. I was really into hardcore at the time of all this, maybe because my good friend was doing a lot of the shows who in return was getting me excited about everything. Over the past few years, everything that has been coming off of Deathwish’s label has been pushing me away from something I was really into. Same goes for B9 and other smaller labels (Lockin Out, Third Party, Six Feet Under.. Although they were the first to put out those NAILS records.) And then there is the kids. Always the kids... tattoos, awkward party attitudes and now it seems lifting weights is cool (I do support leading a healthy lifestyle, but take everything in moderation..)

Here’s the dirty. Stupid cover. (Beating a dead horse, Bannon) Terrible album name..There are some serious riff’s on this album that go into the New Lows song structure which is cool. I’d love to see this record live and they should promote it. This might be the best “hardcore” record in 2011.

5.1.11

Lower Dens - Twin Hand Movement [2010]

Lower Dens - Twin Hand Movement

As I was writing that last post about The Black Angels, I decided to put on this band Lower Dens. After seeing them on "The lists" of 2010 and listening to them, I gave them a shot. I'm about an 8th through the record and so far I'm really impressed. Perfect music to unwind a day with crappy weather outside. Slow melodic tunes with a female fronted singer, Jana Hunter (I could barely tell it was a girl until I looked it up). Also listed as "freak-folk". Great tunes.

The Black Angels - Phosphene Dream [2010]

The Black Angels - Phosphene Dream

The Black Angels are one of the better bands to come out in recent times. Their past two records have been played over and over on my turntable and ipod til I got sick of them. This record came out a few months back and I immediately bought it without doing the whole download and give it a chance because they are consistently good in my books. However I let this record sit on the back burner for so long. I didn't even put it in my top 10 because I completely forgot about it. This 5 or 6 piece band from Texas puts on one of the better live shows I've seen in my life and I try to see them every time they pass through town. Want the dirty? It's Psychedelic Rock without any "tape" effects or weird looping. The band can recreate the sound recorded. I would 100% recommend downloading this if anything I've mentioned interests you. If you want the first two records, well today is your lucky day.

Passover [2006]
Directions To Seek A Ghost [2008]

Enjoy.

Smith Westerns - Dye It Blonde [2011]

Smith Westerns - Dye It Blonde

As much as I kinda dislike this band and their schtick, there is something left to be desired about this band. It's like bad (or good if you like that) 80's pop rock mixed with modern day garage. I feel like this would be the band you'd ask a girl to dance to, or a song that could've been in 500 days of Summer. Dreamy love rock. Am I doing a good job of trying to describe what this band feels like to me? Probably not, but you read my post's anyway and enjoy the time we have together. People like this band, maybe you should too?

4.1.11

Date Palms - Of Psalms [2010]

Date Palms - Of Psalms

I bet you can tell what kind of record this is by the cover. Very psychedelic. I found this on a best of list for 2010. This type of music really mellows me out, especially at work (while deleting large video files, very relaxing). From the original post about this The instrumentation is varied. There are lush drones throughout and interesting tape effects, but the contrast of drones and full-on half-time bass riffage gets me every time.

Get heavy man.

23.12.10

Best Of List 2010 - DeMarco Edition

So it's that time of of year. I'm going to explain why these are my top releases of 2010 (as I usually do) and how I can relate to the album. 2010 was a big year for me. Both of my grandmothers passed away, I got my career back, and moved in with my girlfriend. Pretty heavy stuff right?

So bare with me and my tastes of 2010.

10. Weekend - Sports

I was really curious about this artist when Mexican Summer first announced this record. The cover seems like something I'd be into. Later the video came out which also turned out to be really awesome. I still have yet to purchase this lp, but I've been told that it has some really interesting packaging.

9. The Men - Immaculada

I found out about this band from word of mouth. I really regret going to nyc and skipping out on seeing them play with nomo's at death by audio. The first half of this album is pretty dark and noisey but the 2nd half takes off into kinda a MBV vibe. The packaging of this record is very sketchy, but cool because it was all screen printed and glued together by the band. DIY. Last I heard they were recording a record for one of the bigger garage/indie labels out there.

8. Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky

14 years in the making. I was a little skeptical at first about this record. Nothing really stood out. However seeing them play this record live was huge. I was told that Swans chose to play lee's because they bought a new sound system, and everyone seeing them leading up to that show said they were loud live. Loud in the pummeling sense. Their performance made this record great. Michael Gira can howl one fierce tune.

7. Thee Oh Sees - Warm Slime

Another late pass on my part. My girlfriend bought this record after hearing them before hand and thinking how over hyped they were, just another noisy garage band blah blah. Trust me. See this band live. Best performance I saw all year. I couldn't believe how awesome the whole band as one is. The singer has a Roland Space echo hooked up to his vocals which can be pretty comedic, but during their songs it's so perfect. This band can really rock and I've been told that people go ape shit in their home town San Francisco. Although this isn't their best release, it's a great summer LP. "All we need is the summer time, hey hey."

6. Deftones - Diamond Eyes

Psh, Who would have ever thought Deftones would release something as great as this record. I mean some of us still remember the crap they put out after White Pony (ST? Saturday Night Wrist?) A band that has been around for over 20 years still holding on to the same sound that was kinda embarrassing for some of us to admit (shh nu-metal) we actually liked. I consider this comfort music, background noise, music I can relax a little bit to. This band still rules live, even in a crowd of 20 000 people. Solid release, minus the title track.

5. Masshysteri - S/T

My old roommate got me into this band when they put out their first LP. He had just got back from Sweden and immediately said, check out this band. Needless to say, I was hooked. This record has a little bit of a different sound from their previous recordings, however still amazing. The guitar sound reminds me of all the music I heard while I was in the Dominican Republic for some weird reason. It almost sounds like an electric piano but kinda The Smiths at the same time (I hate the smiths). They also sing in Swedish. This is coming off as a hard sell for a number 5 slot, but trust me, you'll be bobbing your head after the first listen.

4. Nails - Unsilent Death

Holy Fuck what an album. From start to finish this LP (ep?) rips. I've looked around and been told that this is considered an EP but 10 songs on a 12" is an LP to me. Todd Jones is the dude behind all this, and even though his guitar tone live is fucking terrible and has some pretty hilarious gestures live, the dude can play guitar well. I don't say that about many guitarists these days, but Todd Jones can rip. 80's Earache vibe with a hint of PV.

3. Ty Segall - Melted

I don't know why it took me so long to actually listen to this record. Maybe it's because I didn't want to feel like another head listening to stupid hipster music. But fuck, a dude named "Ty Segall" actually writes a really good record. If anyone were to sound like an early version/modern day of "The Beatles", Ty Segall does a pretty good job of it. Take away the terrible recording sound (it may add to it if it's your thing) and add more harmony's, you're not far off. By the looks of it, his live shows seem fun, but I feel like it might lack the recorded vibe to his sound. This is a real good stomper for sure, thanks Ty.

2. Grids - Kansas

Another asshole ripper. I was one of the lucky ones to get a first press of this record for being on the cool guy message boards and sending an email to the right dude who hooked me up with both "White Walls" (which came out earlier in the year as you may have seen on this fine blog) and "Kansas". Both records rip. I prefer this one just on the fact that the songs sound a little better recorded and louder. I think the singer from Harvey Milk recorded them on this as well. I wish I could be in this band.

1. End of a Year - You Are Beneath Me

Now to start things off, I may not agree with everything the singer Patrick has to say, which is fair. It's his opinion and this is mine. But he has the balls to say things that you might only think about and forget about it 2 seconds later. He also has a big heart. I respect this band and everything that they do. This record is flawless lyrically and sound wise.

EP's of 2010

5. Eastern Wave - Populate

I heard about this band and checked them out by chance. It was on one of the many blog's I check out, so whoever you are, I thank you. I don't really know much about this band, but the past two release they've made have caught my attention. Call it post rock, post metal, whatever, it's good.

4. Unsane - Coextinction Release 1

You can't mess with Unsane's sound. It's thick and god damn is it ever soul crushing. This is their new digital only (I hate that) label that will be releasing some big ep's every month it seems. This is the label's first release and what an awesome one it is. If you're into this EP, check out everything else they done. It all sounds the same and it's all amazing.

3. Clockcleaner - Auf Wiedersehen

I don't know how this slipped by my radar, but I had no idea about it until I saw the 12" at the record store. This 4 song EP/LP/Mini-LP whatever is awesome. Driven by the drums and bass this is not far off from what the singer is doing now (PRF) but is still has the signature Clockcleaner guitar style (noisy and catchy) with John's lyrical style that has more of his low vocal pattern (PRF) and his sad sad lyrics. Love this band.

2. White Car - S/T

I was tipped off by a friend about this band. He asked me if I liked Nine Inch Nails, I responded with yes and he let me listen to this EP. I couldn't get enough of it. Two dudes from Chicago with keyboards. Sounds like hipster music, except nobody really cares about White Car.

1. Puerto Rico Flowers - 4

As mentioned about, this is John from Clockcleaner's new band. Bass driven with a little bit of synth. This is some sad man music. I like to try and make up a story of how he came to start this band. I feel like his wife left him and he moved to Australia for a bit to cool off. I could be completely off. This Ep is better than his recently 7" with a Neil Young Cover on it. A little to sad pop for me.

Enjoy.

Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine (2010 Remaster)

NIN - Pretty Hate Machine (2010 Remaster)

This album has been remastered a few times. I almost bought the original in Chicago in the summer. I prefer the remastered version more.
