Cults
Cults are from New York and are mainly a two piece. They played two shows at this year's NXNE festival in Toronto and I couldn't make it to either. Bummer. But this is probably my favourite record of this summer, it's extremely difficult to get tired of it. It's reminds me of Rilo Kiley's more upbeat days with a slightly dancier feel. I hear some Flaming Lips in there at times, mainly the bass lines, but apparently Im the only one that hears that. Whatever...

Holy Fever
This is the new band from Dave and Neeraj of the Suicide File. It kind of picks up where they left off, still with that Rock n' Roll vibe, but less distorted guitars, less ferocious vocals, and lyrics that (so far) don't seem so hate filled. The more I listen to it, the more it grows on me. This record isn't out yet, so when it's released, buy it and support these folks. Good music deserves our attention. Financially, and socially.
Bergenfield Four
Bergenfield Four was a short lived side project of Damian Abraham (Fucked Up), Ian Kehoe (Attack In Black), George Pettit (Alexisonfire), and some other dude. It was the first release on Damian's imprint Low Down Records, which I'm not even sure is really going anymore. It's mid-tempo, classic American jangly punk rock from Canadians. It's good. Ripped from Vinyl.

Dead Only Better
Before Dan Romano fronted Attack In Black and became an Indie darling, he sang and played noodly guitar riffs in Dead Only Better. I'm taking a guess at saying this demo is from 2004, it could have been earlier. But this ep reminds me of mid-nineties punk rock in its prime, and they were tight live. I hear an Iron Maiden influence in the guitars at times, but that could just be me. I hear what I want.

I've been obsessing over this band for quite sometime now. A few friends envy the fact that I bought their first S/T release on vinyl online. This started my craze to start buying records online again, which is a terrible idea. I won't get into that. This band has been given the new genre term of "Stonegaze" which is just "Slowcore" with a bit of an edge than a suicidal feeling that you might get while listening to early releases of LOW or CODEINE. Sadcore is another one.
This record starts off so huge that it gave me chills. Knowing that it was recorded on 2" tape really adds some warmth to every instrument. The songs drops off a bit in the middle and pick up towards the end for a good closer track "Doomseer". They were supposed to play my city on the current tour they will be on shortly, but sadly they can't make it. Bummer. Watch this before you listen to this record.

When I was told that there wasn't much guitar on this record, I wasn't sure if it was how I wanted Young Widows to end up in my mind. It feels more and more bands are giving up the old 6 string for some music in a can. This record is not that, it's not as up front as Old Wounds was, but still a great record. It reminds me of another band from the 90's. Please feel free to help me out with this one in the comments.

This is the first of three records to come out this year by Boris. As usual, Boris is all over the place. This is the super limited Japanese only release that's like 56 bucks to buy from Japan. With that kind of money I would hope it was meant to help Japan in the current state they are in. If you've seen this everywhere and haven't checked it out and you're a fan of early Husker du/Dino Jr, you're probably a luddite. When trying to buy this record off one of the band members, I asked where to send the money to, he replied with "My butt". Needless to say, I received the record recently, and it sounds amazing.

Cold Cave - Cherish The Light Years [2011]
If you like The Cure, you'll probably love this album. A lot of guest artists on this album. "Cold Cave associates Dominick Fernow on electronics and Jennifer Clavin on backing vocal and synthesizer, plus Tonie Joy, Nick Zinner and Sean Martin on guitars, Daryl Palumbo on bass and guitar, Matt Sweeney on bass and Gae Licata on drums. Several of these will be joining Eisold on the road as the touring band, with other players to be announced."

I was a little skeptical (as I always am of anything new) of how a band that has been able to keep up a good 90's formula. The song they put up on their myspace was kinda a whatever track which made me hold off from wanting to buy this. If you're into UNSANE, JESUS LIZARD or other band's like those two that existed during the 90's (also add TAD), you're going to enjoy this. Buy it on vinyl from swimhardercassettes.com. It glows in the dark for all you children out there.

Let me start off by saying this is a better rip than the other shitty one Toxicbreed Funhouse posted. Anyway MAMMOTH GRINDER's side on this is fucking tight as hell. This band is amazing live, I can't get over how tight everyone is. They have refined their sound to be a lot more death metal than what they used to be like on Total Extinction. Hatred Surge side is pretty good, keep in mind that the guitarist (Chris Ulsh) is the same dude in both bands. Very difference riffage. I think i have a man crush on Chris. I'll stop. Rahi from Insect Warfare now sings with HATRED SURGE.

Remember when I said New Lows might be the best hardcore of 2011? Well really, it has nothing on this. I guess I wasn't expecting this to come out. I thought Low Threat Profile only had one 7" in them. If you don't know who these guys are, its the powerviolence dream team. Features Andy from No Comment, Matt from Infest and Bob from Lack of Interest. The first 7" is tight as fuck, but this is still good. Apparently that first (and only) 7" was supposed to come out pre-2001 but something happened and it was sat on for 9 years. Anyway, short fast tunes by angry old dudes. Amazing LP.

Anyway, I was listening to that Date Palms record before hand. Right after this Earth record came on and I still thought it was Date Palms (check it out below!). This Earth record isn't far off from the previous release "The bee's made honey" and it's definitely no Earth 2. So if you if you're into whatever I just mentioned, check it out and BUY IT!

Deathwish Inc’s latest release “Harvest of the Carcass” by New Lows..First of let me state that this band does have a great live performance and they were really nice dudes when they came here the first and only time. I was really into hardcore at the time of all this, maybe because my good friend was doing a lot of the shows who in return was getting me excited about everything. Over the past few years, everything that has been coming off of Deathwish’s label has been pushing me away from something I was really into. Same goes for B9 and other smaller labels (Lockin Out, Third Party, Six Feet Under.. Although they were the first to put out those NAILS records.) And then there is the kids. Always the kids... tattoos, awkward party attitudes and now it seems lifting weights is cool (I do support leading a healthy lifestyle, but take everything in moderation..)
Here’s the dirty. Stupid cover. (Beating a dead horse, Bannon) Terrible album name..There are some serious riff’s on this album that go into the New Lows song structure which is cool. I’d love to see this record live and they should promote it. This might be the best “hardcore” record in 2011.

As I was writing that last post about The Black Angels, I decided to put on this band Lower Dens. After seeing them on "The lists" of 2010 and listening to them, I gave them a shot. I'm about an 8th through the record and so far I'm really impressed. Perfect music to unwind a day with crappy weather outside. Slow melodic tunes with a female fronted singer, Jana Hunter (I could barely tell it was a girl until I looked it up). Also listed as "freak-folk". Great tunes.

The Black Angels - Phosphene Dream
The Black Angels are one of the better bands to come out in recent times. Their past two records have been played over and over on my turntable and ipod til I got sick of them. This record came out a few months back and I immediately bought it without doing the whole download and give it a chance because they are consistently good in my books. However I let this record sit on the back burner for so long. I didn't even put it in my top 10 because I completely forgot about it. This 5 or 6 piece band from Texas puts on one of the better live shows I've seen in my life and I try to see them every time they pass through town. Want the dirty? It's Psychedelic Rock without any "tape" effects or weird looping. The band can recreate the sound recorded. I would 100% recommend downloading this if anything I've mentioned interests you. If you want the first two records, well today is your lucky day.

As much as I kinda dislike this band and their schtick, there is something left to be desired about this band. It's like bad (or good if you like that) 80's pop rock mixed with modern day garage. I feel like this would be the band you'd ask a girl to dance to, or a song that could've been in 500 days of Summer. Dreamy love rock. Am I doing a good job of trying to describe what this band feels like to me? Probably not, but you read my post's anyway and enjoy the time we have together. People like this band, maybe you should too?

I bet you can tell what kind of record this is by the cover. Very psychedelic. I found this on a best of list for 2010. This type of music really mellows me out, especially at work (while deleting large video files, very relaxing). From the original post about this The instrumentation is varied. There are lush drones throughout and interesting tape effects, but the contrast of drones and full-on half-time bass riffage gets me every time.
Get heavy man.
