Suicidal Tendencies


























The Kings of Venice Beach (DOGTOWN, what) crossover thrash. Cyco Miko and crew started out as the most bad-ass hardcore band going, and eventually evolved into a pretty decent thrash band. From there they got progressively shittier and shittier (hey, lets call a spade a spade here). The first 5 releases by this band are un-fuck-withable, and there are rad parts on all of the other releases up until their initial break-up in 1995. The 1999 reunion album Freedumb is pretty rad and they're most punk release since the debut, but they followed it up with a funk soaked turd, Free Your Soul. If Mike has a funk side project (Infectious Grooves) that is 3/5 of Suicidal, why the fuck do they need to add funk songs into the mix? Why? SUICYCO MANIA!

No Use For A Name - The Fat Years


















I've already posted all of the band's New Red Archives albums here, so this is everything they put out on Fat (minus the greatest hits 'All The Best Songs'). For my money's worth these dudes were the best band on Fat (from 95-99). Leche Con Carne will always be my favourite album by them, I still remember the first time I heard Soulmate when I was 13. It was playing on Planet 96.3 while I was in the car on the way to guitar lessons one cold March night, and from that day on I was hooked. I obsessively taped the station every night just to get that song recorded. Not long after that I found the album at Best Buy in Port Huron Michigan and begged my Dad to buy it for me. I have a lot of good memories from seeing these dudes play. It has been several years since I've really cared about seeing these dudes live again, but now that they have added Chris Rest (Lagwagon, The Other, RKL) on guitar I have a feeling I'll be seeing them the next time they're through.

Swingin' Utters - A Juvenile Product Of The Working Class




This is my favourite Swingin' Utters album. Every song is great. Old school punk songs with a modern touch. Always reminds me of High School and seeing SRB cover "The Next In Line" at the Oddball, oh the memories.

Screw 32 - Under The Influence Of Bad People




A great but overlooked punk album released by Fat in 1997. When I was in the 11th grade this was the shit. My buddy Greg would blast this and Frenzal Rhomb wherever we went. East Bay melodic hardcore, like old AFI (musically, not vocally) mixed with some Samiam.

Suicidal Tendencies - FNG Compilation




This compilation takes tracks from the first three ST albums (S/T, Join The Army, and How Will I Laugh Tomorrow) and puts 'em all on one release. It was originally only available as a European import when the band signed a deal with Virgin over there. The file size was too big for mediafire, so this one is a megaupload link.

The House Of Love - 1986-88 The Creation Recordings




Classic British alternative band. A must have for any fan of The Smiths, My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain. This is the bands essential works recorded when they were still young and full of fire and determination. So many rad songs on this but Christine and Shine On are the real stand-outs.

Circle Jerks - Group Sex/Wild In The Streets






Keith Morris' post Black Flag band. Some regard Keith as the best vocalist that Flag had (not me though). Future Bad Religion guitarist Greg Hetson was in the band as well. Everyone should know all this by now, its the fucking Circle Jerks. Group Sex is 14 songs in 15 minutes, and is a punk rock masterpiece (yes several songs are just Black Flag songs reworked, no big deal). Wild In The Streets is pretty rad as well.

The Hold Steady










I love the Hold Steady. Craig Finn is the best lyricist in rock and roll. Great bar rock that references both Springsteen and Thin Lizzy equally. I've never seen these guys live, but I imagine that they fucking lay waste to the audience with their tight jams, like seeing Huey Lewis And The News right before Back To The Future came out. That good.

DOG DAY






I first heard this band when I was record shopping and I immediately asked the clerk what it was and bought the debut "Night Group" then and there. Really catchy indie rock with male/female vocals. They really reminded me of the Danish band The Figurines. The new album takes a real dark tone, but it doesn't suck, it's just more of a grower for sure.

Green Day - 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours




All week I've been listening to a live radio set by the band from this era, and I totally forgot how much these songs rule. This is the debut full-length (39 Smooth) along with the bands first 2 EP's (1000 Hours and Slappy) on one release. Really great punk-rock that is *gasp* pretty poppy. The musicianship is stellar too, Mike Dirnt always lays out a great bass-line and Billie Joe solos all over this thing. Forget about the garbage this band puts out now, Green Day peaked 15 years ago and have been on a steady decline ever since.

This was requested in the comments of the last Badtown Boys post I made. The final full length from these dudes. This one is like the perfect combination of the S/T and Epidemic. Great West-coast punk rock.

Rocket From The Crypt - Scream, Dracula, Scream!




John Reis is the fucking man. Everything he's done has been amazing. This here is my favourite record from RFTC. The songs, the production, the horns, its all totally rad. You've gotta have the honk if you want the skronk.

Millions - Gather Scatter




Great noise-rock/hardcore band from Chicago. This was one of the best things released this year. Three vocalists, pounding drums and bass and intricate guitars parts made this release really stand out. One of the vocalists/guitarists is Scott Flaster who happens to own Seventh Rule Recordings (Millions' label) and was also the guitarist for Small Brown Bike's Dead Reckoning album.

Walking Concert - Run To Be Born



Walter Schreifels post Rival Schools project. Some of the best songs he's ever written. Simple rock/pop songs that are very reminiscent of The Kinks, so in other words, totally rad jams.

Smoke Or Fire








I first saw this band when they were called Jericho RVA. They were opening up for Walking Concert at the Shelter in Detroit. Skip ahead a year and they've changed their name and signed to Fat Wreck Chords. The two Fat full-lengths posted here are flawless. Definitely one of my favourite modern punk bands. If you dig D4, or No Idea bands, then you'll love Smoke Or Fire. Oh yeah former member of From Ashes Rise.

Blueline Medic - The Apology Wars




Born out of the ashes of the great Australian punk band Caustic Soda. These dudes sound like Alkaline Trio mixed with Jawbreaker/Jets To Brazil and just a hint of Morrissey thrown in. Pretty decent band. This was released in 2001 on Fueled By Ramen records.

Blacklisted - No One Deserves To Be Here More Than Me




New Blacklisted. This is different than any other Blacklisted release, but different doesn't always equal bad. There is definitely a 90's vibe going on here, which is awesome. If you think the band has been downhill since The Beat Goes On, then you really won't like this. If however you like change and progression you're in for a real treat here.

Boxer - The Hurt Process




The first "official" Vagrant Records full-length released back in 98. Great Boston band playing melodic punk-rock. Very similar in style and delivery to Lifetime, so if you dig Lifetime get on this. Produced by Trever Keith from face to face.

No Motiv - Diagram For Healing




One of the first bands signed to Vagrant records, and also one of the best. I saw these guys open for Strung Out at Call The Office a decade ago and they put on a great show. This was the album on which they "matured" as artists and started crafting more sophisticated punk/pop jams. I think I have pretty much everything this band has done on my computer, so if you dig this let me know and i'll post more.

Archers Of Loaf
















This is one of the best bands of the 90's. The perfect middle ground between Superchunk and Pavement. Some say they got better with each release, but to me Icky Mettle will always be their best album. The G.O.A.T EP has one of my favourite songs by the band, "Lowest Part Is Free", and the live album (Seconds Before The Accident) is just great all around.
